The Lemosho route which is longer than others allowing climbers to acclimatize properly to the altitude is the most preferred one among Tusker climbers. This extra time will aid in summiting and let you marvel the surrounding a little longer. It is also among the most scenic routes which does not call for midnight summits. Day time summits are preferred by most climbers who avoid the crowd at the summit.

Day 1: Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Londorossi Gate, Hike to Mti Mkubwa Camp

After breakfast and briefing from the tour guide, we’ll head towards Londorossi Park Gate in our safari vehicle. A 3 three hour drive from the forest track will lead us to Lemosho Glades. Then we’ll start walking to Mti Mkubwa campsite.

  • Day 2 : Hike Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp

    After having our breakfast, we continue on a gradually steep trail and enter into the heather moorland zone. Crossing several streams, we continue over the Shira Ridge to the Shira 1 Camp and then on to Shira 2 Camp.

    Day 3: Hike Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

    Once at Shira Plateau, we’ll continue up a ridge to the peak of Kibo passing through the junction in the mountain. We’ll change our direction to south east and move towards the Lava Tower which is also called the Shark’s tooth. It is situated at an elevation of 4,650 meters or 15,250 ft. After crossing the tower, we’ll come across a second junction which goes toward the Arrow Glacier. From the junction, we continue down to the Barranco Camp. This day is purposely for acclimatization since you start and end the day at nearly the same elevation. This will prepare you better for the summit day.

    Day 4:Hike Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

    After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail.

    Day 5:Hike Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

    This will mark the completion of the south circuit which offers splendid views of the summit from multiple angles. Here we’ll be making our camp, and rest for the day, or else can prepare for the upcoming summit day.

    Day 6: Hike Barafu Camp to Summit, Down To Mweka Camp

    Just past midnight, we’ll begin our summit to the top. This is considered the most challenging part of the journey when the wind and cold can be extreme at any period of the day. With short and frequent breaks, we ascend in the darkness. Once reaching at the Stella Point which is at an elevation of 18,900 ft, you’ll be rewarded with one of the stunning view of the sunrise coming over the Mawenzi Peak.

    After spending some time at Stella Point, we’ll ascend for one more hours and will reach the roof of Africa, the Uhuru Peak.

    Descending down from the summit, we reach at Barafu for lunch. Then we further descend to Mweka Camp following loose gravel slopes. Once we arrive at the Mweka Camp, you can enjoy the last evening on the mountain.

    Day 7: Hike Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, Drive To Moshi

    After breakfast, we reach the Mweka Park Gates descending down the slopes where we’ll be handed over our summit certificates. It can be wet and muddy depending upon the rain, and gaiters and trekking poles will come handy as you climb down. Shorts and t-shirts will be more than enough to wear, but you should preferably keep rain gears and warmer clothes in your bag.

    From the gate, continue another hour to Mweka Village. Youth Adventures and Safaris vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi.
